CANFIELD Solitaire

INTRODUCTION
============
Solitaire or Patience games, in their many different forms, probably
have a larger following than any other kind of card game. With rare
exceptions, a solitaire game is a matter of laying out a "tableau,"
or original layout; and then, turning up cards from the "stock," or
undealt cards, trying to build up piles of cards which match in rank,
color, suit, etc. On this basic pattern, however, there are
countless possible variants.
CANFIELD is named after the proprietor of a famous gambling dive in
Saratoga. Here one could buy a pack of cards for $50 and play a game
under the watchful eye of the croupier, then receive $5 back for every
card in the foundation piles, or $ 500 if one got all fifty-two cards
out. Mathematicians do not attempt to calculate the odds on getting
off eleven or more cards, but Mr. Canfield found them right and made
a fortune.
This program is my second entry into the world of ShareWare. The
first being KLONDIKE solitaire which is often incorrectly referred
to as Canfield. Work is presently underway to expand KLONDIKE to play
DOUBLE Solitaire against the computer. Additionally, other solitaire
games such as, Forty Thieves (also know as Napoleon at St. Helena),
Pyramid, and others are planned. I hope you enjoy CANFIELD, and
will encourage the development of high-quality ShareWare programs by
filling out the enclosed registration form.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================
Canfield runs on an IBM-PC or compatible running under MS-DOS 2.0
or greater, with a Monochrome, CGA, EGA or VGA monitor and display
adapter. 256K of available memory is required. A Microsoft
compatible mouse is recommended, but the game can be played from the
keyboard. If you want to use the mouse, the mouse driver must be
installed before you load Canfield; please refer to your mouse
documentation for instructions.
CANFIELD RULES
==============
Shuffle a regular pack of 52 cards is used. Deal 13 cards into a pile
placing them face up on your left. These cards are the STOCK. The
next card of the pack is your first foundation ($5 back already!); put
it above and to the right of the stock. Then to the right of the stock
deal four cards face up, starting your tableau.
Whatever the rank of the first foundation, the other three cards of the
same rank are also foundations. When (and if!) they become available,
put them up beside the first. Build up on the foundations in suit and
sequence; the rank in the suit is circular, the ace being above the
king and below the deuce. (For example, if the first foundation were
the 10 of clubs you would build with first the jack, then queen, king,
ace, deuce, and so on up to the 9.) You win the game if you build each
foundation up to thirteen cards.
On the tableau piles you may build in descending sequence, red on black
or black on red. For example, on the 8 of spades you can place either
the 7 of hearts or the 7 of diamonds. All the cards on a pile may be
moved as a unit, and matched according to the bottom card.
The thirty-four cards remaining after you have dealt are the HAND.
From the HAND, turn up cards in packets of three, placing them in one
waste pile, face up. You may play off the top card of the waste pile
onto foundations or tableau, thus releasinglower cards one by one.
After you have exhausted the hand, pick up the waste pile without
shuffling, turn it over and there is you new hand. You may run thru
the hand by threes as many times as you wish until play comes to a
standstill.
You are entitled to have four tableau piles. If any pile is cleared
away, making a space, fill it with the top card of the stock. After
stock is exhausted, spaces may be filled from the hand. Usually if
the game reaches this stage, it can be won. The great difficulty is
getting all your stock cards into play.
In Mr. Canfield's gambling house, you could turn up the cards one at
a time and go through them only once; or turn them up three at a time
and go through them only three times. It has been estimated that the
average was only five or six cards played.
ALTERNATE RULES
===============
Canfield, as played by its original rules, is very hard to win and.
can be a very frustrating. This game incorporates two popular
variations greatly increase the odds of winning. Under the first
variation, cards are moved from the Pack to the Waste Pile in groups
of three, and you can go through the Pack as many times as you wish,
i.e., once the Pack is exhausted, you move all the cards from the
Waste Pile back to the Pack. Under the second variation, cards are
turned up from the Pack one by one, as in the original rules, but
you can go through the Pack an unlimited number of times, as in the
first variation. This is the easiest of all three playing modes.
